5 Popular Types of Fences

by Kevin Smith Author

Choosing the right fencing material depends on your budget and preference. You have to consider whether it matches the overall look and feel of your house, or if it can provide better security. With seemingly endless choices, it can be overwhelming to decide which one fits your goal.

If you're undecided on which type of fence you should buy, take the time to find out how each can make an impact on your property. Here are some popular ones that homeowners choose.

Wood

Wood fencing is one of the most common among American homes. It's stylish, durable, and sold at a reasonable price. It’s also versatile, so you can paint and stain it to match the facade of your home. While most wood can last a long time, some types are more durable than others. If you want a more hard-wearing kind for your property, choose those made from cedar, tropical hardwood, or black locust.

Aluminum

If you’re on a tight budget, aluminum is a good option. It costs less than wrought iron and some kinds of lumber. The surface is coated with powder paint and sealed with multiple layers of protective film for added protection. It doesn't rust like iron, and its paint doesn't chip off like that on wood. While it isn't as strong as steel, it's cheaper than many materials.

Wrought Iron

Wrought iron is a metal that's pulled and twisted to form fancy designs with small details. It's strong and durable, so you don't have to worry about it getting easily damaged. But, its strength and beauty don't come cheap. Additionally, you’ll find that an ornate gate is one of the most common applications for this type.

Electric

Although they can be installed for homes, electric fences are often used on larger expanses of land like farms and ranches. Their biggest selling point is they're efficient in keeping out animals and human intruders. But, they're more expensive than others.

Vinyl

Vinyl is another cost-efficient option. It doesn't rot, bend, or rust. Plus, it's easy to care for, so you can just wash off stains or dirt. The only downside is it's limited to light colors and faux wood designs or styles.

Depending on your property's aesthetic, certain materials are preferable over the others. For example, vinyl fencing in St. George may be cost-efficient but has limited options. Wrought iron is definitely beautiful, but it's expensive. Choosing the right material will depend on what features you're looking for.
