5 of History's Greatest Hairstyle Trendsetters

by Lesley Sampson Freelance Writer

It’s normal to have the occasional bad hair day but some people go out of their way to ensure that their hair always looks perfect, devoting hours to maintaining and styling their locks. As with anything, hairstyles come in and out of fashion, and what was once so popular can soon become outdated in the world of hair. There are some famous people whose choice of hairstyle is iconic and for years to come, people are seen sporting the same ‘do. So here are five of history’s greatest hairstyle trendsetters.

1.      Emma Watson

When the Harry Potter film star cut all of her lovely blonde locks off back in 2010, the press was shocked. Speaking in magazine interviews, Emma Watson told the media that the reason she had her hair cut short was to escape from being associated with the films that made her famous. She wanted to be free and to have confidence and cutting her hair off was one way for her to achieve that. Although she said that boys hated her new ‘do, Emma Watson was praised in many lifestyle and fashion magazines for her look. You too can achieve hair confidence by taking inspiration from Emma with short hairstyles by L'Oréal Professionnel.

2.      Natalie Portman

One celebrity that is no stranger to doing anything for her job is actress Natalie Portman, who shaved off all of her hair for her film role in V for Vendetta. Following in the footsteps of stars such as Sinead O’Connor, Demi Moore and Sigourney Weaver, the celebrity’s shocking ‘do actually accentuated her beauty even further, turning what is considered to be unfeminine totally on its head.

3.      Pixie Lott

The singing sensation Pixie Lott is often seen sporting bohemian style hair, which is thought to be the inspiration for many festival-goer hairdo’s and the star made it fashionable for grown women to wear their hair in plaits, a style formerly considered only suitable for younger girls. Whether she opts for bohemian curls or partially braided hair, Pixie Lott always adds a unique personal touch to her style with various hair accessories.

4.      Cara Delevingne

It’s only natural for people to take fashion tips and inspiration from models and the catwalk, which is perhaps how model Cara Delevingne is able to make the top-knot look so stylish. However the trick is not to go for too sleek a look, and instead opt for a messy top-knot, and pull strands of hair from the front down to frame your face.

5.      Selena Gomez

The MTV Awards are full of trendy celebrities, but one that really stood out amongst the crowd this year in terms of hairstyle was teen actress Selena Gomez. She performed her latest song “Come & Get It” in a Bollywood style outfit and styled her hair in a Mohawk side braid for the occasion.

So there you have it; five stars portraying five trendsetting hairstyles, all of which have been copied time and time again since their unveiling, with the trendiest hairstyle for this spring tending to be cute short pixie crops, adored by the likes of Keira Knightley, Anne Hathaway and of course, Emma Watson.
