IV Cannula as we all know is something that stands for the intravenous cannula, and is a process through which the fluids or the medicines are passed into the veins of the patient using a needle or a tube catheter. This is a needle that is generally believed to be placed under the elbow, near the wrist and at the back of the hand. Different sites can also be used if it is required or necessary. Proper and successful insertion of IV cannula places turns out to have its own importance as it can even cause discomfort to the patient. Following are some of the major steps that can be used while inserting an IV Cannula and let's have a look at them below.

Finding a really good vein before you actually begin with the process. Usually it is the large vein that is located on the underside of the forearm and is something that is most often used.

Applying a tourniquet just a few inches above the site in order to get your veins to be swollen up for the easy insertion process.

Using the right catheter and making sure that the needle does not touch anything else other than the skin of the patient. This can even compromise on their sterility increasing the various risks of the infection.

Disinfect the area using the alcohol pad and then wipe it out gently making sure that there is an even coat of alcohol. This helps in minimising the various chances of infection.

Stabilizing the limb of the patient with gentle pressure and taking care that you do not touch the IV cannula directly.

Have the caps been removed that is given on the catheter and then tightly pull the skin around the iv cannula site. Slowly try and insert the needle with minimum angle keeping it as much as is parallel to the skin giving it a minimum angle.

The flashback of the blood in the catheters applicator will then indicate that the vein has been hit in advance to the needle with one more centimetre into the vein.

Have the needle being pulled back again for around 1 centimetre from the vein. When the cannula has been seated in the vein remove the tourniquet and have the sterilized bandage put immediately over the lower half of the catheter hub.

Once done with the entire process disposes the needle for the safety of your patient and removes the tourniquet in order to prevent discomfort in the patient.

The last but not the least applies a piece of tape to the area around the catheter while attaching the IV cannula tubing. And make sure that there is no loop in between.
