5 Home Practices to Keep Your Cat Fit

by DCC Pets Veterinary Hospital

Anyone who has a cat, knows very well that the time we spend with our feline friends is possibly the best time of the day that takes away all our stress. These cute creatures give us long periods of cuddles, love, companionship. They run up to us when we arrive home and entertain us (and annoy us) with their mischief.

In return, your cat expects just as much from you in the form of care and joy. For example, ensuring that your cat is properly fed, exercised and cleaned well is a great way of showing how much your pet means to you. At the same time, keeping your cat fit will allows you to maintain a smooth sailing friendship lasting years. Some tips to make sure that your cat remains healthy and active:

Groom your cat daily

Usually, cats can take care of themselves by cleaning themselves. However, many of them prefer an occasional helping hand to brush their hair, shave them, bathe them and trim their nails. This is very beneficial as it protects your car’s hair from damage and removes any nasty smell. To make sure that your cat is calm and relaxed during the grooming session you must do it gently and slowly, and reward them once the session is complete if they don’t make much fuss. Also the frequency depends on whether the cat is long haired/medium haired.

Give them adequate food and water

Some steps you can take to ensure they are getting all they need in the form of food or water are: Feeding them the right quality of food, dried or canned, both of these are good for providing nutrition to the cats. Following a schedule, make sure that you are feeding your cats food of the same brand and at the same time frame everyday. However we recommend having a thorough health check for your cat and confirming meal plans with the vet basis life stage, health condition and season.

Proper Maintenance of the litter box

This is very important to make sure that your cat clears out the waste in the box, rather than outside it. Make sure that you clean it and if you can, then an automated litter box should be ideal

Keeping your cat active

You should make sure that the cat has access to plenty of toys which will encourage it to keep playing. You can also create an obstacle course, use cat towers to engage your cat. Mix puzzles with meals ensuring even the lazy cats have a mix of motivation and activity.

Using a Scratching Post

There is a lot of equipment designed for a cat’s playtime and fun activities and this is probably the best. Not only does it prevent damage to your furniture, it also provides playtime to your cat. Moreover, your cat can stretch its body, move it’s fingers and use its claws as much as it wants on this.
