5 DOs and DONTs of Personal Protection

by State Widepatrol Statewide Patrol Inc

We all want to be safe, especially at home, in the workplace, shopping, dining out, and driving. Yet, there are several reasons why you may not. Perhaps you have been the victim of a crime in the recent past and worry you will be again. Maybe someone has threatened you and you fear they may make good on their threat. Maybe no one has said or done anything to you yet, but you have a high profile and want to keep yourself safe just in case. All of these are good reasons to look more into personal protection.

With that in mind, here are a few tips to get you started, a few things you should always do and a few things to avoid:

DO

Keep your car fob within reach at all times. Yes, this means while in bed too. Car fobs contain panic buttons and pressing the panic button will cause your vehicle to repetitively blasts its horn and flash its headlights. This can double as a great alarm in case of an emergency. If your car can draw attention to your location it will hopefully scare would-be-criminals away.

Enable “remote wipe” for your smartphone. If your phone is stolen, you want to make sure that any sensitive information on your phone is wiped. If not, all of a sudden a criminal could have access to your banking app, your calendar that lists your children’s activities, your social media profiles, and much more.

DONT

Think you need to protect yourself. You don’t need to be one hundred percent safe all on your own when you can hire a Austin, TX personal protection officer to do the job. Sometimes called a bodyguard instead, personal protection officers in Austin are available for various private and public functions and can keep you safe as you go about your daily life. You can hire one for one event, like the day you testify at a court trial, a period of time, like a round of layoffs at your company, or even for a long time. The choice is yours!

Share anything and everything online. Oversharing on social media is just asking for trouble! People have a tendency to post vacation pictures while still far from home, which can lead to attempts to rob your home. Don’t post where your children go to school, or photos of high-end jewelry or electronics. There are so many other examples of what not to share on social media; the bottom line is to think twice before posting anything.

Share personal information in an incoming call. Never reveal sensitive information on calls that were placed to you. This person may not be who he or she claims to be. If you receive a call from your credit card issuer or bank about potential fraud on your account, for example, hang up and call back at the official telephone number printed on the back of the relevant card.

Whatever it takes for you to feel safe, whether it is a personal protection officers in Austin or keeping your car fob close by, begin doing it right away. Your safety is not something to put aside, because a criminal will not wait until you are fully prepared!
