4 Types of Commercial Roofing Systems

by Kevin Smith Author

If you've ever consulted with a commercial roofing service in Ocala, FL, then you probably have an idea of the various options for your building. Here's a closer look at 4 different roof systems.

Metal

This is one of the oldest and most popular roofing options for commercial buildings. Metal systems use different kinds of materials, such as:

·         Aluminum

·         Copper

·         Metal tile sheets

·         Tin corrugated galvanized steel

·         Stainless steel

·         Stone-coated steel

All of these materials are known for their durability and ability to withstand extreme temperatures and weather conditions. Fire-resistance is another quality that they possess.

But after some time, the sheets may become susceptible to rusting and overheating. To keep them looking as good as new, you'll have to apply a layer of elastomeric coating. This will serve as a protective shield against elements that can damage the roof.

Thermoplastic

This is one of the more recently developed materials for roofing systems. Thermoplastic olefin, or TPO, was first introduced in the '90s as an alternative to polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Compared to the latter, TPO is more cost and energy-efficient. It's a single-ply membrane that's made of synthetics and mineral fillers.

As for performance, thermoplastic roofs can resist damage caused by impact, UV radiation, bacterial growth, as well as substances like oil and grease. For this reason, TPO is the ideal choice for restaurants and other industries that handle food and oils.

Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer

The main components of this system are ethylene and propylene, both of which are from natural gas and oil. Ethylene propylene diene monomer, or EPDM, is a rubber sheet that's often used for flat and low-slope roof systems. Aside from the fact that it's easy to use, EPDM is considered as one of the best options for roofs due to its superior durability. It can withstand strong winds, hail, extreme temperatures, UV rays, and other elements. With regular maintenance, this sheet can stay watertight and spotless for decades.

Green

With everything that's happening to the environment today, it's no surprise that people are looking for ways to be more sustainable. Roofing isn't an exception to this shift, which can explain how green roofs have become increasingly popular.

A green roofing system can collect various pollutants found in the air, be it solid or gas particles. It can also keep a building cool in the summer and warm in the winter. Energy efficiency, fire retardation, noise reduction, and durability are other key features of a green roof. They also add aesthetic value to a home.

Those are just 4 of the many systems you can choose from. To get a quote on any of these options, call a commercial roofing service in Ocala, FL today.
