4 Questions to Ask Your Potential Roofing Company

by Kevin Smith Author

The roof is one of the most important parts of a building, protecting the occupants against the natural elements, such as rain, wind, hail, and heat. Considering its importance, it’s imperative to do your due diligence prior to hiring a roofing contractor. Hiring the wrong company could result in poor workmanship and could result in you being responsible for a variety of things, from injuries to further repairs. Here are four questions to ask an Atlanta roofing company prior to hiring them.

What is your company’s physical address?

Any reputable roofing company should be able to provide information such as their name, phone number, and physical address. When hiring a company to handle something as important as your roof, you want a successful company that can be trusted. Some companies may provide a P.O. Box rather than a physical address. If they can’t provide a physical address, it’s a red flag that this isn’t the company for you and you should consider looking elsewhere.

Do you have insurance?

There are two types of insurance that every roofing company should have; workers’ compensation and liability insurance. Both of these types of insurance protect the homeowner from an accident or poor workmanship. Workers’ compensation protects you if an employee working on your roof gets injured. Liability insurance protects you should any damage be done by the company during the repair or replacement. Without these types of insurance, you could be responsible for medical bills or other costs.

Do you have a roofing contractor license?

It should be a priority to hire a roofing company that is licensed by the city or state. Depending on where you live, it may be required that any roofing company be licensed. You’ll also want to make sure they confirm that they have a roofing contractor license and not just a business license. These are two different types of licensing and the company you hire should have both.

How long is your warranty?

There are two ways in which a warranty protects you. It covers you should your roof fail within the specified time period and provides the peace of mind that the roofing company stands by its work. There should be two warranties, one from the manufacturer and one from the roofing company. The manufacturer’s warranty covers the materials used while the roofer's warranty covers their work. While most roofer’s warranties last for a year, some may be longer. Make sure to ask what is covered by each warranty.

If you’re in need of a new roof or a roof repair, it’s important to do your due diligence when choosing a roofing company. Asking these questions of your Atlanta roofing company will ensure you’re hiring a qualified roofer.
