4 Practical Ways to Treat Atrial Fibrillation Naturally

by Nancy Wilson Health Care Professional
Atrial fibrillation, also acknowledged as AF or AFib, is a state of the heart in which it beats rapidly or irregularly. Due to this, the blood flow to the heart gets affected, and the risks of having blood clots, heart failure, and strokes get increased. The irregularity in heart beating affects the upper chambers of the atria, and the blood flow disruptions move forward to other parts of the body, including lower chambers. It can be life-threatening if you leave this heart disease untreated/unregulated.

Here are some practical steps that can help you deal with atrial fibrillation:

Medical Treatment

You need to see a cardiologist if you notice frequent pain in your chest, a sudden increase in your heartbeat, dizziness, low blood pressure, shortness in breathing, fainting, weakness, breathlessness, and fatigue. The cardiologist can ask you for having a few lab tests (EKG (electrocardiogram), holter monitor, transesophageal echocardiogram, echocardiogram, chest X-ray, and stress) after doing your physical examinations, like pulse rate and blood pressure. On the base of physical examinations and lab test results, your doctor may prescribe drugs in categories of beta-blockers (Multaq), calcium channel blockers, potassium or sodium channel blockers, and blood thinners for the prevention from the clot formation.

Modify Your Diet

Having a balanced diet is pivotal for all. However, you need to take utmost care of your diet when you start facing irregularities in your heartbeats. Increase the amount of fresh vegetables and fruits, as they contain plenty of antioxidants that can help you regulate heart diseases. Ensure to have blueberries raspberries, oranges, apples, plums, citrus fruits, leafy green vegetables, bell peppers, and squash. You should have five servings of vegetables and four servings of fruits if you have AFib. Avoid having too fried or spicy vegetables.

As far as possible, try to have organic foods in your diet and keep yourself away from having junk/processed food items. Cut your fat intake and avoid sugars or sweetened drinks. You also need to limit your intake of meats but increase fish easting.

Take Supplements

Apart from focusing on your diet, you can opt for taking supplements if you have frequent irregularities in your heartbeats and chest pain. Talk to your cardiologist and discuss what supplements you should take. Your doctor may ask you to take supplements for fish oil, magnesium, calcium, potassium, and vitamin D.

Make Lifestyle Changes

Along with medications and diet, you need to make some changes in your lifestyle. Be physically active if you live a comfortable life. Opt for stairs instead of lifts or escalators and go for a brisk morning walk if feel it hard to do workouts of high intensity. Moderately cycle if you have a problem with running.

You need to stay away from stress or try to manage it by meditating or performing particular yoga poses. Besides, you can do breathing exercises. You need to have proper a short break from what you are doing, which can be reading a book, working on the computer, watching television, or talking to someone. Ensure to have a break after every 30 minutes or at least an hour.

Limit or stop your alcohol consumption and quit smoking if you are serious about treating your atrial fibrillation. You need to have a check on coffee, teas, caffeinated tea, chocolate, cola drinks, energy drinks, and anything else with caffeine.

Conclusion

Atrial fibrillation is a warning sign of having heart attacks, strokes, or heart failures. Act fast to consult a cardiologist when you notice frequent chest pain, irregularity in your heartbeats, weakness, dizziness, breathing problems, or low blood pressure. Follow your doctor’s instructions, get the advised lab tests done and take the complete dose of the prescribed medicines. Apart from medical treatment, focus on your diet, bring changes in your lifestyle and take supplements to get cured soon or have a check on your atrial fibrillation.
