4 Chief Reasons for Radiator Overheating and its Fixes

by Aarush Khatri Sales Manager
When an engine is running, it generates a huge amount of heat, most of which expels through the exhaust system. The rest of the heat remains in the engine area so that engines exhibit optimum performance. However, it is necessary to maintain the temperature in the engine area for which radiators are chiefly responsible. Enter the radiator, the coolant flows through the canals in the engine to keep it cool for operating it at its maximum potential. A radiator is a heart of every cooling system and is responsible for ensuring right temperature in engines.

According to a report, the most common cause of car breakdowns in UAE are the radiators. Ironically, in most cases, overheating of cooling system destroys the engines. Factually, radiators are simple and easy to maintain. Many industrial radiator manufacturers also give a handy guide to protect your radiators from issues. Here are a few signs that cause radiators to overheat and here’s how you can fix it before it turns out to cause some huge destruction.

1. Low Coolant Level

Coolant, a mixture of antifreeze and water is a fluid that is used to prevent engines from heating. The coolant, basically, keeps water in the radiator from boiling in warm temperature and freezing in cold temperature. A low coolant level is a major reason that can cause overheating. The drop in coolant level might be the result of leakage in any of the core parts which could turn to be a serious issue that would lead to the breakdown of your vehicle.
You need to renew the coolant every time you get your radiator serviced. Ideally, you should change the coolant once every year and keep checking the coolant level once a month.

2. Clogged Radiator

Over time, dirt, dead insects, debris etc. could clog your radiator resulting in blockage of airflow. This can lead to overheating. Many times, if the clog is not visible plainly, it could possibly be an internal clog causing issues in your radiator.
If you suspect of a clog, it is advisable to scan the radiator using an infrared thermostat. Another way is you can simply open the cap of your radiator when the car is cool and check the fluid and the radiator for any suspended contaminates floating or any brown discolouration.

3. Radiator Cap

If a radiator cap is malfunctioning, it can cause radiator overheating. This is a very common cause for issues in the radiator but is usually overlooked. If you fail to screw radiator cap correctly then it could cause the leakage of coolant leading to overheating.
The cap is also essential for maintaining the correct water pressure and if it is not screwed properly, it could compromise the precise pressure requirement.

4. Thermostat

Thermostat is a valve responsible for the transition of water to be cooled. If the thermostat is stuck closed, there will be no possible escape for the hot water in the system to move to the radiator for cooling. This results in overheating issues.
In such cases, you can replace the thermostat as it is simple and easy to fix them. You can get the right thermostat from any radiator cores manufacturer or any automobile garage.
