4 Beauty PR Myths & How They Can Affect Your Business

When new beauty brands choose a PR company, most startups
have a general idea about public relations, but may not know more intricate
details.
They simply know they want amazing results quickly. Both
print and online media mentions are still important today and we understand a
new brand hopes for immediate press. As is the case with any successful
business, effective beauty public relations strategies take, and most
importantly, many need diligent and smart PR pros to work in tandem with.
Most startups and small business owners only understand a
few ideas, perhaps even myths, how a pubic relations agency executes their
work. With the rise of social media influencers and online marketing, brands
began to see beauty public relations as something they can do on their own.
With just a few minutes a day, sending a handful of emails, it should be easy
to get amazing results on your own. Right? Yes and no. If you have a fantastic
grasp on PR and communications, don’t your brand’s public relations outreach
will work. However, the majority of people don’t even know how to craft an
effective email pitch.
From an insider’s point of view, we expose a few common
public relations myths and explain why they are bad for startups.
All Publicity is Good
Building a beauty brand’s awareness and reputation takes
time and work. You put a lot of work, (blood, sweat, and tears) into creating
your brand from the ground up, please remember that good publicity doesn’t
always happen overnight. There is such a thing as bad press. Not all publicity
is good - especially in our world of social media where brands are torn down in
an instant. Remember, your brand takes work and so does press placement and
publicity. You want the right type of beauty public relations for your brand,
not something that goes viral on Instagram and turns away future customers.
Your brand, and hard work, deserves the right kind of media attention.
A Wire Service Is All You Need
Traditional press releases will never go out of style.
However, most startups and even established brands in fashion and beauty should
never rely on simply submitting a press release and hoping someone reads it. A
lot of beauty editors and influencers don’t even read press releases - they
simply want fast facts without having to pour over paragraphs. A press release
is often viewed as outdated. An experienced beauty public relations expert
keeps up with the latest trends in communication and implements them when
pitching brands and products.
Print Is The Only Media Placement
Well-loved fashion glossies are folding as newsstand
readership dwindles. Fifteen years ago, print was the gold standard of media
placement, but times have changed. Now consumers search for products and
reviews online. Print is still important, but digital is now its equal. A
backlink from a top beauty site will do your brand wonders in the SEO
department. For your brand’s website, top tier backlinks are the holy grail of
media placement. Influential bloggers and social media influencers are also
still solid placement for your brand. (Although we do caution that the ROI
isn’t always there when paying influencers to peddle your products on
Instagram.)
Only Ex-Journalists Can be Good PR Professionals
A good beauty public relations expert doesn’t need to come
from a journalism background. Many beauty brand founders discard a public
relations firm or freelancer simply because they don’t have journalism or
communications experience. That’s a myth and here’s the truth: Almost anyone
can be a good PR professional. Providing the PR firm or individual possess
excellent communication and thought skills, it’s a profession open to many. And
let’s not forget - beauty public relations is not rocket science. Many
universities now have broader classes than simply journalism. There are Digital
Marketing and Communications classes, Business Marketing and Communications,
etc. Don’t get caught up thinking a public relations expert must have
previously had a journalism career.
Every industry has their myths, even PR. However, those
myths are incredibly limiting if you buy into them. Public relations isn’t
difficult compared to other professions, but it does take a savvy communicator.
As a brand founder, do yourself a service and research PR. Not everything in
the world of public relations is fast. You’ll find that you simply cannot
demand immediate press. Many prospective clients ask right away: Can you get me
an interview with this magazine or that website? The answer is always no. A
public relations expert cannot promise anything. PR isn’t like the movies where
you land on CNN the next day.
Keep an open mind when working with PR professionals. Be
acceptive to their ideas and most of all, learn from them. If you would like to
work with a great beauty public relations firm, please feel free to get in
touch. We are happy to answer any questions.
