3 Reasons Parents Choose to Teach Middle Schoolers at Home

by Kristen White Blogger
Middle school is commonly comprised of the time frame between 6th-8th grade which means that students are anywhere from 11-14 years of age.  During this time, education studies also transition from concrete concepts that can be memorized to challenging students to look and think beyond what is on the page.  For some students this can be a difficult time, so parents have to look at what is the best approach for their child to set them up for success.

The 8th grade online school program offered by a top homeschool platform is one of the best investments that a family can make. Whether you choose to start in 6th or 7th the advantage for the student is that they can learn and study on their own with help from full-time or part-time professional teachers in addition to the support they receive at home. They have the ability to ask questions, use online tools and resources and complete assignments according to their own pace so they fully understand the material by the time they are ready to enter high school.

One of the top reasons that parents choose this option is to give students a solid foundation going into the upper grades when credits and grades matter for the future of college admission.  Another reason is to avoid the bullying and peer pressure situations that typically occur in middle school.  While it is important for kids to learn how to deal with difficult and pressure-filled events, school is for education and when that is not the focus then the parent needs to find an alternative solution. Home school programs in Florida allow for parents to teach their kids at home and partner with an accredited online school platform while still encouraging students to interact with local schools in sports and extracurricular activities.

This approach is balanced and provides the opportunity for students to interact with their peers and develop the necessary social skills while keeping education and grades at the forefront and on a successful path.  Another reason parents may choose this time frame to homeschool their child is to change their placement when their current school does not allow some education options.  Every child is different and the online placement tests can help ensure the student is put in the proper grade for homeschooling, complete that grade successfully and then go back to the traditional school system a year ahead of where they were before.

Every family has to look at what is best for their student on an emotional, educational and developmental perspective and then decide on the right path for success. Online homeschooling is a great opportunity to provide a safe environment for the preteen to learn new concepts, test ideas and provide input without peer pressure so they can grow comfortable with who they are becoming as a teenager.  High schoolers that choose to stay enrolled in the homeschool program can participate in college prep courses, dual enrollment and Honors or AP classes to put them on track for their college application requirements.  Give your middle school student a chance to look at the options and decide if learning at home is an investment that puts them ahead for the future.
