3 Questions to Ask During Your Consultation with a Divorce Attorney

by David L Martin Law Offices of David L. Martin, Esq. PC

If you are consulting with a divorce attorney in Nassau County for the first time, you are probably looking for some answers. And to get your answers, you must ask the right questions. Otherwise, you might find yourself spending the first hour listening to a spiel rather than getting the answers you have been so desperately looking for.

Here is a quick rundown of some questions you should ask your divorce attorney in Nassau County. These questions will help you determine whether or not this is the attorney who will fight for your best interests. How vigorously your divorce attorney works for you will undoubtedly have some impact on your financial situation and much of your post-divorce life.

How much will it cost me?

Get specifics about the attorney's fees — do they require a large retainer upfront, or will you be billed regularly? You should also know how much your divorce will cost. Though this is only an estimate, an experienced Nassau County divorce attorney should be able to give you a pretty accurate number.

Do you have experience in divorce law?

You will certainly need to have an attorney who specializes in divorce or, at the very least, family law in your county. If not, you might want to look elsewhere. For obvious reasons, having a divorce attorney who is familiar with the local court system and judges and other lawyers in the area is hugely beneficial.

What is your approach to divorce cases?

Learn whether your attorney takes an aggressive or conciliatory approach when dealing with your spouse's attorney. If you want to avoid any friction or conflict and settle your divorce fast, you should avoid aggressive attorneys. That being said, you do not want a divorce attorney who will not fight for your rights if things get heated.

Of course, you would want a lot more information from a divorce/family court lawyer in Nassau County. You must also be prepared to answer some questions yourself as it would help your lawyer gain a thorough grasp of your case.
