There are over 300 breeds of horses in the world today, developed for many different uses.
No animal is more noble than the horse, since it is by horses that princes, magnates and knights are separated from lesser people, and because a lord cannot fittingly be seen among private citizens except through the mediation of a horse. Since early mythology, horses have been associated with great rulers. Welsh and Celtic legends revered white horses as sacred and only to be ridden by royalty.
The beginnings of the depiction of horses in art history, pre-date the written language of man. Artists began creating images of horses in prehistoric times and the inclination been has around ever since. The horse has captured the attention of man for longer than recorded art history or even just plain old recorded history.
Horses have been represented in art for thousands of years. The horse has appeared less and less in modern art due to horse’s becoming less significant as an implement of war.
