Giving a lecture

by Christy Lynch Teacher,Artist,Writer

Most lectures are never fun to sit through and believe it or not that just as bad for the instructor that is giving the lecture. The instructor has more pressure because he/she already knows that the class is already antsy about having to sit through the lecture.

One thing that can help you greatly in being prepared is know the subject or topic that you?re going to be talking about. You want to give your students good information but not load them down with tedious information that doesn?t amount to much. They will catch on quickly and therefore become not interested in the lecture at all.

Another thing you want to do is rehearse what you?re going to say this way you won?t be stumbling over your words.   Another good thing you might is get to know your students this helps in taking some of the tension.

One good way is to video tape yourself giving your lecture then watch the video to see what you need to improve on, what you need to change things like this. It might also be a good idea to let someone else that you can confide in to watch it as well sometimes another person can point out something you may have missed.

Your opening statements are very important so make this interesting the better your opening is the better your lecture will run.

Don?t load the class down with a ton of information or facts this will lose their interest quickly instead pick a few that you feel are important to the topic being discussed. Also pay attention to the class if you see some starting to lose interest  do something to perk everyone up like maybe changing the tone in your voice become suddenly excited or suggest taking a break for a couple of minutes.
