The psychology of a weight loss program

by Mark Clemens
Starting off on a weight loss routine is relatively easy if one waits until January second. Everyone is doing it at that time so it seems. Too, it is expected that one will do exactly the same if one is carrying excess weight.

By contrast, it is more difficult to start in April. The reason is that one may know of others who started immediately after New Years Day but who have since quit. Perhaps one will do the same in under thirty days The fear of this, along with the fact that one is most probably all alone in their aspirations right now, may cause considerable difficulty.

Nevertheless, waiting until tomorrow or next January in the most extreme case is neither good nor necessary. One simply must be aware that he or she will be all alone and uneasy, and there is little that can be done to alleviate these feelings.

This is the place for a weight loss support group. Anything from a  very basic Jenny Craig  or Weight Watchers program is far superior to going it alone. Few have the resolve of Stallone's Rocky Balboa and all of us need to admit it. That is the first step in making sure that we ill be with our new routine six months from now. Of course, a more comprehensive group which also deals with exercise and supplementation would be even better.

Six months is an very general estimate of the amount of time needed for a weight loss program to be effective. Experience makes this seem feasible for virtually everyone. But that amount of time is necessary to make the desired changes. Having a group to be part of is the best insurance that one will indeed stay at it for that long.

When one starts, he or she will experience considerable internal thought processing. Seldom is it  optimistic.Generally it is the opposite, referred to as negativity. Most often it is talked about as voices in one's head. They can say anything from what makes this time different than before to are you not too old to be starting off on this today. Being able to share these internal dialogues in a group setting lessens their power.

We all experience negativity like this when starting out at any thing. Naturally, the specific voices we hear are as different as each of us. But we all hear them. In the final analysis, the only thing that matters is that we do not let them keep us from staying at what we are all about. In this case, that should be six months of dedication to our well thought out weight loss program.
