And the smears on Obama do begin…

by Beth Schmillen

There’s a nasty email forward going around the Internet alleging that Obama is a Muslim and that he doesn’t say the pledge or sing the national anthem. It’s designed to play on latent racism and bigotry in some voters, and to cause “regular” folk to think less of him (”why won’t he say the pledge? What’s wrong with him?)

Well, like most things you get forwarded to you via chain letters, this accusation is false on all counts. Snopes does a good job of running down the rules, the video of the event in the photograph attached to the email forward, and other evidence that Obama is a pretty normal American when it comes to the pledge and the anthem.

For what it’s worth, I don’t always put my hand over my heart during the anthem at baseball games and I always skip the “under God” in the pledge (my explanation for why is here). The pledge didn’t contain that in the original version, and the original version is good enough for me.

Update: The other smear is to try and make something of the fact that he doesn’t wear a flag pin on his lapel. This one is true, but like much about Obama, he has a thoughtful reason why he doesn’t:

“You know, the truth is that right after 9/11, I had a pin,” Obama said. “Shortly after 9/11, particularly because as we’re talking about the Iraq War, that became a substitute for I think true patriotism, which is speaking out on issues that are of importance to our national security, I decided I won’t wear that pin on my chest.

“Instead,” he said, “I’m going to try to tell the American people what I believe will make this country great, and hopefully that will be a testimony to my patriotism.”

Considering we were in the throes of “Freedom Fries” and the labeling of anyone that questioned the administration as being traitors or sympathizers of Saddam’s regime, not succumbing to the group think symbolism is a sign of his judgement. He was right about the war, and this along with his opposition to the war are testaments to his judgement and independence. Patriotism isn’t what you wear but how you act. He’s acted honorably and with sound judgement.

Obama is a politician and he is, therefor a target for brainless individuals with nothing to do but try to cause trouble.

It happens all over the world.

As a non American, I must say that when it comes to the pledge, it has often worried me that you are not trusted by your country.

To me, if I make a pledge to anyone, that is it. My word has been given and I will be trusted by whomever I gave my word to, to stand by it.

America, it seems, does not have the same faith in it's own citizens - requiring them to be perpetually refreshing their pledge of allegiance and loyalty on a daily basis.

Why should anybody feel obliged to wear a flag pin in their clothing? Can they not remember where they live without it? Does wearing one make them a better American?

These silly pins remind me of the stickers charity collectors love to stick on us. I never let them do it - when I give to charity it is my business alone and not something I need to advertise.

People in public office or who make a stand on any subject about which someone else might have contrary opinions is just another target for moronic beings unable to formulate a reasoned and aposite response.

As Arthur said, he's a politician, so he'll always be a target. Those emails have been going around for a while. What I find sad are the vast numbers of people who blindly forward emails that contain misinformation without researching it first. Unfortunately, the type of people who base their 'beliefs' on what someone else tells them, are also the type of people to mindlessly forward emails.

As for the pledge, I don't always put my hand on my heart, and sometimes I don't even say it. I can be patriotic and respectful of the country I live in without doing so. Actions speak louder than words.

Thanks for sharing this.

Hi, Pete,

Just how much more trouble can Obama get America into?

It really does not matter who gets elected.

If they are forced into the sort of actions the Bushes want to see (and that seems to be highly likely) - LOST CAUSE just doesn't enter into it.

America will continue to be the biggest threat to peace and world unity and foist upon us all a terrorist assault that will leave no stone standing.

All in the name of the supposedly benign oilgarchy that Americans are told (and believe) is a democracy
