Giving your cat a Pill

by Margaret Elmendorf

Now I wonder how many of you have had the experience of taking your cat to the

vet cause you baby isn't feeling well, and it  turns out that the cat has some disease or

another, and the treatment is to give the cat pills. It may be either one a day, or two a

day and hopefully not any more than that.

So how in the world do we get the darn pill into the cat. There are several ways.

One, what  I call the pill shooter, which you can get at your veterinarian. With this tool,

you get a hold of the cat, have the pill inserted in the top of the pill shooter, and scruff

the cat's neck very gently, and slowly pull the cat's head back until he or she opens her

mouth a little bit, and then put the pill shooter into the cat's mouth as quickly as you can

without scaring the cat, and shoot the pill down it's throat. This works well especially if

there is someone that can help you.

Another way, is to simply scruff the cat's neck, and slowly pull the cat's head back, until

his mouth is open slightly, and put the pill as far back as you can, so the cat will

swallow the pill. You really have to keep the cat scruffed and it's head back some. Some

cats, I have one right now, will just let you put the pill in their mouthes.

I happen to have a cat right now that neither of these ideas work on her. She throws

her head around and tosses the pill across the room. So, I have devised a program that

works 90% of the time. The rest of the time, we just wrestle till  the pill goes down.

And that program is that I put the pill in a tiny bit of cat food, let it soak for 10 minutes, till

the pill is soft and stuck to the cat food, and then put it into her mouth as far back

as  I can get it, and hold her mouth closed until she swallows. At times she will somehow

get the pill and throw it out of her mouth, but most of the time this works.

Hope I have been a little help with the darn pill giving chore.

The medicine that this cat has to take isn't liquid. Boy I wish it was . We have a major go around twice a day, trying to get the pill inside of her instead of on the floor. But we usually get inside.

Hi Margie,

I used to have cats that would just let me give them pills if they needed them.

But I fear the day I have to give any pills to the cats I have now!
Thanks for reminding me what that'll be like!
