10 Tips for Creating Effective Restaurant Menu Design

by William Woods Blogger

The menu is like your restaurant's calling card. It's often one of the first things that people see. If you've had people walk away after taking just one look at your menu, then a bad design could be one of the reasons why. Here are ten of the best ways to create a menu that's effective in stirring their interest so you won't have to watch your customers walk away again, at least not without a second thought.

Placement is Important

The location of the food items matters. Because people often read from left to tight, you'll want to put essential and pricey items on the menu right in the center, and then put the second-best things on the menu on the right side.

Use Images Carefully

Only go with high-quality images. High-resolution photos work best if you want to show each of those food items to their best advantage. Make sure you hire a pro. Blurry photos aren't going to help.

Improve Loading Speed

Don't overload your pages with too many photos. That could hurt loading times. If it slows down your page, that could be why many of your customers are jumping ship before they even explore your site.

Consider the Font Style

Bold fonts are right, but make sure they are consistent with the tone and vibe of your business. If you're using a playful and whimsical font style, but you run a classy formal dining restaurant, that's not going to work.

Create a Special Section

You can add individual sections to your menu to showcase your restaurant's uniqueness. For instance, you can put restaurant recipes to show customers some of your cooking goodness and secrets.

Don't Align the Prices

Aligning the prices invites comparison. Don't do that. Make it easier to mix them up by not aligning them, whether vertically or horizontally. Also, don't rank items on the menu from high to low.

Play with Color

Some colors evoke hunger and excitement. If you're using dull shades and tones, step it up. Render your menu in colors that attract consumer interest. Find shades that work with your logo's colors. That's one way to get people to take your menu seriously.

Use Boxes and Lines

The organization helps direct the eye. Do that to your menu by using boxes and lines. That should help with the navigational experience, too, as it helps consumers figure out where they should go next.

Put Up a Winning Copy

Content is still king. An excellent description can do more than entertain; it can persuade potential customers to order and try out your food finally. Hire digital marketing pros to help you create compelling copy. With the right visuals and text, your menu will keep your customers coming back for more.

Create Multiple Options

It's not enough to put out physical menus. Make sure you have menus online too. Fix them up. Can people view those menus whether they're on a laptop, tablet or mobile? Multiple menus or having menus on different platforms will also help generate more customers and revenue for your business.
