The Purpose Of Living Rooms In Homes

The living room is the front room of a home which is used to entertain guests.  It is also called the lounge room, the drawing room, or the sitting room.  In really formal houses like those of dignitaries and royalty, living room furniture could be really ornate as they are reserved for dignitaries and heads of governments.  They also could have different living rooms to entertain different classes of guests. 

The term living room came into use only in the late 19^th and early 20^th century.  Regular middle class homes use the living room as the reception room and furnish it with coffee tables and sofas.  This is also the place where the family gathers together on holidays or at the end of a long day.  Bigger homes use the living room to entertain guests formally while the family room is used for the family to gather together for entertainment or for leisure. 

This family room is also called the den and usually houses the TV, music systems, and other forms of entertainment.  In places like the United States, Canada, UK, and Europe, living rooms sometimes have fireplaces which are lit to warm up the room during the cold winters.  The living room furniture in these places is arranged with the fireplace as the focal point.
