I chose a career in otolaryngology early in medical school and chose to focus on head and neck cancer surgery because I felt that who we are as people — our voices, our looks, our sight, our hearing — was threatened by cancer, and I aspired to preserve form and function by minimally invasive surgical approaches, cutting-edge reconstruction and novel therapies (chemotherapy, targeted therapy and radiation) that avoided the surgery that could cause significant dysfunction.
