Mike battled with drug misuse and addiction for an extended period before the founding of MyPillow. However, he was ultimately able to overcome his obsession. He has a strong history of drug misuse – cocaine, alcohol, and crack cocaine. Since the 1980s, he had been hooked to such drugs and particularly cracked cocaine. In 2009, he had abstained from alcoholic beverages and illegal substances and maintained his sobriety.
