It’s safe to say that just about everything that a person does during their lifetime involves certain elements of risk.  However, some activities can be more dangerous than others if certain safety measures are not taken.  This is especially true when it comes to riding street bikes.  There are a number of different reasons why the number of motorcycle and street bike crashes fluctuate from one year to the next.  However, in most cases, those accidents are attributed to the lack of riding properly and following these safety tips.

Always be aware of road and traffic conditions – there are numerous elements that make roads unsafe for street bikes including:

•    fine sand
•    pebbles
•    potholes
•    railway monitors
•    road-surface condition that hinders traction
•    wet streets

Check to the rear and side of you before changing lanes – this means being acutely aware of your “blind” spot or that area that is not visible in your rear view mirror before switching lanes.  Don’t forget your turn signals.  They were installed on street bikes for a reason.

Make yourself as visible as possible – your head and tail lamps should always be on when riding street bikes, even during daylight hours.  Make sure proper reflectors are installed as well.  The more visible you are, the less risk of being involved in an accident or fatality.

Protect your eyes and your face – safety helmets have a visor to protect your eyes and your face from bugs, dirt particles, trash, wind, and just about anything that can harm you if it hits you in the eyes or face.  Make sure the visor is down when you are driving.

Safety clothing is also recommended – heavy duty leather garments are made especially for riding motorcycles and street bikes.  Not only do they protect you should you have to lay the bike down, they protect you from the weather better than regular clothing.

Take it easy on sharp curves – crashes on curves are extremely common.  So when you see that yellow diamond-shaped sign indicating a curve ahead and the recommended speed for taking it, pay attention.

Wear your helmet – no matter how fast you are driving and what the road conditions are, it is foolish to ride street bikes without wearing a safety helmet.  Recent statistics show that fatal bike accidents are reduced as much as 30% when helmets are worn.  Obviously, there is a good reason that these devices are oftentimes referred to as “brain buckets.”

The person who is used to sitting behind the wheel of a vehicle has no idea of the different safety issues that are involved with riding street bikes.  Hence the lack of respect that they occasionally show those individuals who ride them.  In closing, when you are first learning how to ride, it has been suggested that you learn from a professional instructor.  Just keep in mind that no amount of money spent on learning how to ride can ever replace the value of the human life they are carrying.
