Another absolutely essential quality for success in Internet Marketing
Update : A few months ago, I wrote an article about common sense
- Building relationships
- common sense
- copywriting
The first is obvious. Everybody says so.
The 2nd one, everybody thinks they possess it. Well, I heard a saying years ago : common sense isn't common.
The 3rd can either be developed as a skill by writing, writing, then writing some more. Even then, help from experienced copywriters is always welcome. Also, if you judge you can't become a good copywriter, prepare to spend a part of your business budget for it.
I realized today there is a 4th quality. It has the same importance as 1 and 2.
It's understanding human nature.
All its quirks and idiosyncracies.
No matter how right you think you are, some people will refuse to listen. For different reasons :
- pride
- stubborness
- laziness
- love of statu quo
- the comfort zone is, well, comfortable :)
- they believe you have no competence or credibility
To really understand human nature, we must be able to acknowledge the strengths, weaknesses, interests, opinions and values are vastly different from one person to another.
Of the list I just wrote above, pride is by far the main obstacle you will meet.
The other's pride.
Yours too.
Stephen Covey wrote in his "7 Habits of Highly Effective People" that one of those habits was first to understand, then to be understood.
I think one thing must be mentioned. Some people won't feel the need to understand you.
That's ok, Don't take it personally. If these people get in your way, just ignore them and find the people with whom it'll be fun to work.
The starting point to understand human nature is, as a well-known Greek philospher said : know thyself.
It means, know your personality, interests, and most of all acknowledge your strenghts and weaknesses.
After that, the 2nd step is to put your pride aside. Not easy, in fact, can be excruciatingly difficult, but it's worth it.
3rd step is to learn not to take things personally. Especially in Internet Marketing. The bottom line is, we are becoming serious business people. Our encounters will mostly be with people who live hours from us, by car or by plane.
One very important point to keep in mind : there are people out there, they are bullies. Not all of them are idiots. Some are highly intelligent. These are the ones who can do the most damage to your self-esteem. They will twist your words, try to confuse you, wait for you to make the tiniest mistake then jump at you with guns blazing, trying to discredit you.
Ignore them. They are not worth your attention. Back up your positions with common sense. If they insist, report them to the authorities and move on.
