You have heard it before but in the vending business it is especially
true...
The #1 thing to learn about the vending business is
about...
LOCATION LOCATION LOCATION
I can not express enough how important it
is to find a "good" spot to place your vending machines.
There are a couple of different ways to
get your machines placed.
~1 Is to hire a Locating
Service.
I can not say that would be my first
choice for many reason. I am sure there are vending locator
services that are
good at what they do. But I am certain that many are not. I have heard
many
horror stories about this part of the vending business.
~You can ask for Referral.
Your
referrals could come from places that you already have vending machines. You
could offer a
finders fee if someone gives you a lead into a new place and
you are able to place your machines.
These referrals could be offered to
anyone, perhaps the business owner who was kind enough to
allow you to have
your machines with him. Maybe an employee of the business who used
your
machines to grab a quick snack.
I have even asked the UPS driver to help
with this. I am sure people would be happy with a small
finders fee. I was at
a stop one time and I noticed the same truck was there every time I was.
He
delivered parts to this location. I stuck up a conversation with him and was
able to have a soda
machine placed where he worked.
Use your imagination. A finders fee of
$50 cash would certainly entice most people to just simply
keep their eyes
and their ears open.
~ The very best way to find a good location is to
look for it yourself.
Now I know what your thinking. That sounds scary RIGHT
!!!!
HHCTB?
They will either say "Yes" "No" or
"Maybe" and gosh I hate those darn "Maybes."
I am sure that a nicely dressed woman
will be able to get in the door easier than a man.
Here is a trick that I
myself have used in the past.
I ordered an extra box of the
individually wrapped popcorn. The exact kind that we put in our vending
machines.
I tied up each packet with a bright red
ribbon and tied my business card to it. OK OK... I hear you asking...
Why did
you tie the packets up with red ribbon rather than just tape the business card
on it.
BECAUSE... that is how I do things. I took a bit of extra time and
made it stand out.
The trick is getting to the person who
will be the one who will say "yes" to you placing
vending machines at this
new location. So this little "gift" is intended for the person who is known as
the
Gatekeeper. The front office person is the person who keeps the riff
raff out. In my opinion, I am not the one
they are trying to keep out. I am
offering a service. Some thing that they probably could use.
So the
popcorn can be used to say... " Hi, I am Cindy. I am with BBB Vending. I just popped into "butter you
up"
Now... I ask you how could someone kick me out for that? You could also
replace that popcorn with a candy bar
and your just dropping by to "sweeten
you up"
I sold insurance for many years and
getting to the decision maker was always hard. It got to be a game. A numbers
game... so why not add some game pieces and make it fun. It will make it
easier too.
Your not really barging into this place
of business to demand to see the decision maker. Your there to make
an
appointment. Your laying the ground work so when you do a follow up or a
call back the decision maker will be more
receptive to you.
Just an
idea for you,
Till the next time.... Happy Vending
