Good Article Ben,
Me personally,
I always get a maintenance plan when buying a mobile device, because I may(or have) drop the mobile device in water, the ground, run the lawnmower over it, etc., so to answer your question.
I would rather repair my cell phone.

It depends. If you have strong ability on manual work, you might prefer DIY repair.

Nowadays, almost 90% cellphones have big touch LCD screens. This is a tendency because more and more users want a cool expenrience when they use the cellphones to play games or watch movies. In the same time, problem comes up. When using cellphones, users drop them by accident inevitably. The touch LCD screens are fragile and most of them would be cracked after falling onto the ground. Then, what will you do if such thing happens? Will you buy a new cellphone? I do not think that's a good idea.
