If you like history, and machine politics, you are going to love this book. Robert Caro is a master story teller. He is skilled at taking boring history and weaving into a fascinating story. In the Power Broker you learn about how one man, Robert Moses single handedly designed New York State. From the United Nations building, Fordham University's Lincoln Center campus, the New York State New York Thruway Authority, and so many other massive projects. Robert Moses amassed so much power that he was the Power Broker, New York City Mayor's, New York State Governors and eventually the President of the United States had to seek his blessing to do anything of significance.The Power Broker will take you back in time to when New York City was developing, showing you how Robert Moses circumvented the law to get his way by creating quasi governmental authorities that were not controlled by any level of government but functioned almost as a government unto itself.
To develop his view of New York he displaced thousands of families just to create roads and highways. Despite the fact that he could have saved the homes of thousands simply by re-routing his vision ten feet one way or another. It is a great read and you will learn a lot. I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone that loves politics, history, or loves New York.
