Beta-2 microglobulin (B2M) are tumor markers which are present in a large number of blood cell cancers. The analysis of B2M levels in serum or plasma samples is helpful during clinical assessment of cellular immune system and tumor marker activation. There is evidence to indicate that concentrations of beta-2 microglobulin is higher in a large number of diseases which are associated with an increase in cell turnover. The measurement of urine sample is useful for detecting many renal filtration disorders, due to fact they can are unable to tolerate the acid pH for a long period of time. B2M is produced by the lymphatic system and the detection in urine or plasma samples is helpful in differentiating between an activation of the lymphatic system and a disturbance of the kidney function. There are also cases where increased levels of beta-2 microglobulin have been observed in many benign conditions such as: some acute viral infections, renal dysfunction, chronic inflammation and liver disease.
