Your Hobby, Your Life
Having a hobby is part of a balanced lifestyle that lends itself to
stability and productivity if not taken to the extreme. Hobbies are
important in that they give a person the ability to step back from the monotony
of daily routine and give a person a chance to refocus, although some people go
as far as to be overboard from one point of view. Extreme sports — are
they too extreme an escape from boredom? Those that participate in
extreme sports may not mind the label, but probably feel that if you’re not
living on the edge you’re taking up way to much space!
Hobbies can be anything from being very active such as running marathons, or
being so passive as observing wildlife through a pair of binoculars. Some
people dedicate a great portion of their lives to their hobbies. Many
Olympians turn what began as a hobby into a lifestyle as it were. Some
people spend so much time and effort on their hobbies that they can easily
rationalize turning them into a business for profit. And in some cases,
with proper drive and attention, hobbies can help a person make lots of money.
Most psychologists agree that it’s a very healthy pursuit to be engaged in a
hobby. Hobbies can be very rewarding and relaxing. Those that are
very stressful can become too much like work, and often get abandoned.
One of the most satisfying things in life is to be so very accomplished in
something that you are the very best or among the best at it among those
living. These types of hobbies can be very fulfilling, and at times even
addicting. Hobbies when practiced in moderation can have a similar effect
on a person as a vacation does, and can breathe new life into them, helping
them refocus their energies and giving their “batteries a recharge” so they can
then get back on track to more rigorous tasks that require their full
attentions.
As time passes and people age, it often happens that their hobbies
change. We experiment with our likes and dislikes, and as we pass through
different phases in life, we often pick up or drop hobbies. Of course,
some hobbies stick and become part of us. But there is no shame in
letting old hobbies die and new ones spring forth. This defines our
dynamic and evolutionary expression of ourselves. Don’t be afraid to
sometimes drift and experiment when it comes to hobbies. The main thing
is to have fun and be constructive, inventive, and creative.
Hobbies can add such a fulfilling dimension to our lives that it would be
counterproductive to stifle our whims in regards to them. Whatever you
choose as your hobby or hobbies, have a blast and don’t get frustrated!
