Quick Guide To Infant CPR

Are you interested in learning infant CPR? Whether you’re going to be a new parent or you are a health care provider needing to refresh your skills, it’s a good idea to have a firm foundation of how to perform cardiac, pulmonary resuscitation. CPR is used when a person is unconscious, not breathing, or not breathing normally.

On infants, performing CPR can feel scary. They are much smaller, and in many situations, the thought can be you do more harm than good when performing CPR. But, if you know what you’re doing, and more importantly, receive proper training, you can feel confident should you need to perform infant CPR. Take A look at the four-step process for infant CPR.

Step 1- Use The ABC’s

The ABCs are airway, breathing, circulation. First, you’ll need to assess the baby’s condition. If they are unresponsive and not breathing normally, call 9-11 immediately. Check for obstructions in the airway. Make sure the child is lying on their back before beginning the CPR procedure.

Step 2- Locate the Proper Position

If there is no breathing, you’ll need to place two fingers over the breast bone and start performing compressions. You’ll need to do this 30 times. Each time you push, you’ll need the chest to recoil before starting the next compression. You’ll need to push down 1.5 inches. Compressions should be roughly 100 per minute, no more than 120.

Step 3- Open Airway, Mouth to Mouth

Next, you’ll need the baby to be in a position to get adequate airflow into the lungs. You’ll need to tilt the head back and lift the chin. Pinch the nose, and create a seal with your lips on theirs. Slowly give one breath, then the second.

Step 4- Repeat

Repeat the cycle of 30 compressions, followed by opening the airway and performing mouth to mouth, and giving two breaths. Continue performing infant CPR until help arrives.

Build Your Confidence

The best way to build confidence with CPR is by attending certification classes. While you can attend online-only classes for learning purposes, if you need certification for employees, typically, you’ll need in-person skills to check. Regardless if you want to learn for your own personal peace of mind or you need certification for work, it’s important you choose a reputable company to obtain your training.
