Yoga to energize your body, awaken your mind and calm your soul

by Pratik Agrawal I am a Yoga Teacher.
Yoga is supposed to be at least 5000 years old. But Hatha yoga seems to be older than time itself!  It is believed that Lord Shiva, the king of all Yogis, gave an entire discourse on Hatha Yoga to his consort Parvati, on a lonely island, believing that there was no one else around to hear the conversation.  But it so happened that the fish or “matsya” (later known as Matsyendranath), remained quiet and still in the waters, and overhead Shiva. In due course he passed on this knowledge to his disciple Gorakshanath and Chaurangi. The GorakshaSamhita written by Yogi Gorakshanath is widely considered to be the source of Hatha yoga as we know it today.

What is Hatha yoga?

Hathaa Yoga encompasses postures (asana), breathing (pranayama), purification procedures (shatkriya), gestures (mudra), discipline and meditation.

But in the popular avatar, especially in the west, a Hathaa yoga course consists mainly of Asanas or postures which tone up the body and relax the mind.

Most forms of contemporary yoga like Astanga yoga, Iyenger yoga etc are basically all Hatha Yogas.

What to expect from a Hatha Yoga class?

Hathaa yoga is perfect for the beginner. People from all ages and with varying fitness levels will find something to suit their needs.  But that doesn’t mean that these classes are not challenging. They are tough and challenge your flexibility and strength. But a yoga class is not just about working up a sweat, or building stamina and strength- this you can get from even running around the block and doing some basic free hand exercises! The classes are more slow paced, and incorporate breathing, relaxation and meditation techniques.

What are the benefits?

The benefits of Hatha yoga range from health benefits of lowered BP levels,

better coronary health, increased stamina and energy levels, toned digestion system, relaxed and alert mind and the list can go on and on…

What if one wants to do a Hathaa yoga teacher training course?

Excellent! But it is meant only for those who want to delve deeper into the myriad layers of this ancient science. It is an investment of time, energy and money. But if you are truly inclined then a Hatha yoga instructor training will change your view of yoga about 180 degrees.  It will take you to the more profound concepts and give you meaningful insights into this ancient science.

But do ensure that you get a Hatha yoga teacher training certification from an authentic organization. Only then will you be able to benefit not only at your own personal level but do justice to the students you aim to teach in future.
