Jerry Weissman on his Harvard Business review blog , today posted an article about the use of  "filler" words that have become common in today's speech and the impact they have on the listener.

Terms such as... "Does that make sense?", "You know...", "Like I said .." and others are cited as creating doubt as to the accuracy of the message being effectively communicated or the competency of the speaker to bring his message across.

Other terms such as... "Sort of..", "Kind of..", "Like, you know..", "Basically" et al, all suggest that the information itself is either in doubt or undefined and therefore suspect.

I think he might be, like you know, right?  And that he kind of believes this to be true and perhaps he sort of is basically correct and like ahhh, sure of himself.  But is this not the way many people speak today?

Perhaps I would agree if we lived in a society of peoples all educated to the highest degree and if all strove to emulate only the finest of the icons in society, but such is not the case.  Base commonality and a bland format with wide room for disavowal of any particular point of view are the hallmarks or today's speech.

The dusty halls of academia are filled with the shifting ghosts of those who no longer live in the real world that the rest of us inhabit.  Language and its usage is like a living breathing creature that consumes old nuances and spits out the bones as relics of a past time.  It morphs and changes from year to year and generation to generation.

The usage of words out of context, such as "I axed you a question", while abhorrent to those of us who appreciate a finer form of speech, are perfectly acceptable to the colloquial person on the street.  No less so are the fillers that are used or the questioning phrases that once created a doubtful understanding.

Bear in mind that it is society that creates its language that becomes the yardstick by which it can be measured.  When good is fine and bad is better there is no profit in argument as the ignorance is lewd, crude, proud of itself and will hear no rebuttal.
