Windows 7 Support Ends

by Jorge Zetina Computer Engineering Group

After January 14, 2020, Microsoft will no longer be supporting the Windows 7 operating system. This Windows version has been in service since its introduction on July 22, 2009.

While it is possible to continue to use Windows 7 past the deadline, Microsoft will no longer provide technical support, updates, fixes, or security enhancements.

Suspending support for ageing systems is standard practice for Microsoft as the company continues to develop new and improved iterations of their operating systems. Updates and refinements were also suspended previously for earlier versions like Windows XP and Vista. These were discontinued in 2014 and 2017, respectively, also after about 11-12 years of service.

What Happens When Windows 7 Support Stops?

Suspension of support will impact current subscribers of Office 365 ProPlus, Office 365 Business and Office, and Office 365 Business Premium. For all of these products, Microsoft requires that “customers stay current as per servicing and system requirements for the product or service.”

Your most the significant risk with the suspension of Windows 7 will be the threat to the security of your data due to a higher potential of being compromised.

How Does This Impact Me?

Microsoft advises that those continuing to use Office 365 ProPLus on Windows 7 will eventually, experience deteriorating performance and reliability issues. Although Microsoft will provide updates for these Office products until January 2023, be advised that there will be no future updates for Windows 7 during that time.

Microsoft strongly recommends against continuing to use Office 365 ProPlus with Windows 7 after January 2020. Using a modern cloud-backed client on this older, unsupported systems can result in serious problems.
