Willpower Hacks to Help Achieve Your Goals by Joven Cabasag

by Joven Cabasag CEO Ganolife
What is willpower? Willpower is control over oneself and one’s conduct. The amount of willpower you have, determines if you will achieve your lifelong dreams. Developing a strong willpower is essential if you want to accomplishing your goals. Joven Cabasag, CEO of GanoLife, understands the importance of willpower and wants to share his tips on how you can increase your willpower to turn your dreams into reality.

• Boost your energy supply
Willpower is a mental muscle that is directed by glucose levels. The more willpower you exert, the lower your energy and blood glucose levels become. This is why it is important to always replenish your glucose level to increase your willpower. Studies show low sugar levels in your blood makes it difficult to stay focused when achieving your goals. So eat better foods that will give you a boost. Any foods that are naturally high in sugar, such as carrots, raisins, almonds, or apples, will give you more energy and willpower.

• Reduce the amount of decision making
When you make a decision, you are practicing self-control. Your willpower decreases each time you practice self-control. If you want to strengthen your willpower, then limit the amount of decision-making you have to do throughout your day. You can start by planning out your day so that you make less decisions as the day goes on because you already have a set plan. This makes room in your brain to focus on making decisions on more important matters that will help you attain your personal goals.

• Finding a connection in the moment
Keep your focus on your long-term goals are when you are making a decision. Find a connection in the choices you are making in the moment to how it can benefit you in the future. For example, when you procrastinate, you find yourself mustering up the willpower to find time and energy to get tasks done, which causes you to exert more energy then necessary. You are only focusing on the moment, instead of connecting how this moment can work towards your future. This motivates you to enjoy doing these tasks because you realize it benefits you in achieving your goals.

• Inhibit the ‘pleasure seeking’ part of your brain
Naturally, our brains are always seeking pleasure. But most pleasures distract you from achieving your goals and dreams. Your brain uses a lot of willpower to ignore these temptations, which cuts into your willpower supply. Make things easier for yourself and get rid of anything that will distract you. Put the TV in another room if it distracts you from getting work done, or remove all unhealthy foods in your house if your goal is to get healthy. Be proactive and by eliminating as many distractions as possible in your life.

• Don’t be so hard on yourself (yes, it makes it worse)
Healthy self-criticism helps you grow, learn, and improve. But being too harsh of a critic will drain your energy.  Remember everyone experiences challenges in their lives and no one is perfect. Being perfect is an unrealistic goal that many never reach. It creates a lot of negative self-talk that will leave you feeling unmotivated and bad about yourself. However, if you approach yourself with compassion and love, you will find yourself feeling more motivated to pick yourself up and keep moving forward, even during the toughest times.

• Strong habits mean stronger willpower
A habit is a routine of behavior that is repeated regularly and tends to occur unconsciously. Habits define we are. Successful people adopt healthy habits that help them accomplish their dreams. You can begin developing a strong habit by setting up small goals for you to accomplish throughout the day. Each time you accomplish that goal, set a new goal so that it keeps you motivated and pushing to become the best person you can be. These small actions are very rewarding and helps develop your willpower muscle.

A little bit more willpower can go a long way. Willpower gives you the strength to overcome any obstacle that stands between you and success. Adopt these willpower hacks in your life and watch how much your life will improve.
