Will a Chiropractor Help My Headaches

by Dr. Joel Dixon Doctor

So many people suffer from chronic headaches and migraines on a daily basis. This minor problem can quickly become a major one without treatment. Over the counter painkillers and even prescription ones only temporarily numb the pain and can cause many negative side effects, so if you are suffering from headaches, whether occasionally or chronically, it's time to contact a chiropractor.

What causes headaches?

Headaches can be caused by many different factors such as stress, tight muscles or even allergies, but the most common cause of headaches is subluxations in your neck or upper back.

What is a subluxation?

The World Health Organization definition of a vertebral subluxation is "A lesion or dysfunction in a joint or motion segment in which alignment, movement integrity and or physiological function are altered, although contact between joint surfaces remains intact." In simple terms, if you have a subluxation in your neck or back, the vertebrae are misaligned, but not injured.

What causes subluxations?

There are several different factors that can contribute to a subluxation such as an injury, chronic misuse, or constant trauma like carrying too much weight, like a backpack, on one side of your body. Chronic muscle tension and tightness can also lead to a subluxation.

How does a Chiropractor treat a subluxation?

Chiropractors use spinal manipulation, also known as adjustments, to relieve pressure on the impacted nerve and vertebra. Relieving the pressure on the spine will also relieve the tension in the surrounding muscles. Your chiropractor may use massage alongside adjustments to get a more effective result.

How else will a Chiropractor treat my headaches?

Along with adjustments and soft tissue massage, your chiropractor may use other types of therapy to treat your headaches. Since posture could be a factor contributing to your pain, your chiropractor may recommend different stretches and techniques to improve your posture during the day. They may also discuss different relaxation techniques or diet changes that may help improve your headaches. Different nutritional supplements such as B12 may also be recommended.

Headaches are not only painful, but they also could begin to inhibit your everyday life if left untreated. Instead of reaching for that bottle of painkillers, contact Dr. Joel Dixon for an appointment right away. Your headaches will be gone before you know it and you can get back to enjoying your life.
