Why you must have a digital signature certificate?

by Mona Singh Writer
A Digital Signature Certificate explicitly associates the identity of an individual/device with a pair of electronic keys - public and private keys - and this association is endorsed by the Certifying Authority. The certificate contains information about a user's identity (such as name, pin code, country, email address, the date of issue of the certificate, name of Certifying Authority, etc).

The pair of electronic keys complement each other and are used by browsers and servers to encrypt and decrypt information regarding the identity of the certificate user during information exchange processes. The signer retains control of the private key, which can only be used with a password. The public key is disseminated with the encrypted information. The authentication process fails if either one of these keys in not available or does not match. This means that the encrypted data cannot be decrypted and therefore, is inaccessible to unauthorized parties.

Here are some of the key advantages of having a DSC:

Security:

A Digital Signature Certificate authenticates your identity electronically. It also provides you with a high level of security for your online transactions by ensuring absolute privacy of the information exchanged using a Digital Signature Certificate. The certificates can also be used to encrypt information such that only the intended recipient can read it. The time stamping mentions the date & time of the DSC, thus enabling a formal track of the documents, reducing the risk of frauds considerably.

Valid for a variety of contracts:

You can use digital signature certificates, to sign a variety of documents like offer letter for prospective employees, rental contracts, legal work agreements, etc.in a safe and secure manner.

Ease of doing business virtually:

DSCs make it possible to sign legal contracts online, thus saving on paper, time and efforts. DSCs can make doing signing documents across borders as easy as physical signatures. You can sign many documents within a short span with a couple of clicks, saving commute time. Since the documents can be signed without a time lag, you can start working with your clients and vendors faster, hence delighting them.

Cost-Effective:

When you use a digital signature to sign the contract, you can send across a PDF online and need not mail across physical copies of contracts. Using digital signatures you can save on storage space for keeping the contract, mailing costs, and paper costs. The cost savings make digital signatures a popular choice.

Globally acceptable:

Globally, most countries accept Digital signatures as legally binding and acceptable in legal courts as a piece of evidence or proof, in case of disputes. The widespread acceptance across countries make it easy to sign cross border contracts with digital signatures.

In most cases, Digital signatures are issued for a period of one or two years. Post expiry of the validity of digital signatures, these need to be renewed. Digital signature certificate renewal can be a quick and hassle-free process when you choose a trusted service provider with experience in DSCs.
