by Lucia Peter Digital Marketing Company
In a major embarrassment to the Egyptian Government, the wheat production in the nation this year is one of the lowest in years.

Egyptian Supply Minister Moselhy had recently claimed in a press meet that Government was looking to purchase 3.5 to 4 million tonnes of local wheat to cut dependency on international wheat. However, this year, Egypt announced its wheat harvest with a total of just 3.15 million tonnes of the grain produced by the local farmers.

Wheat is a very critical staple in Egypt as Government uses it to Supply its tens of millions of citizens a bread subsidy program.

Pertinently Egyptian agriculture ministry had claimed in 2017 that from next year, the dependency on international wheat for bread program will decrease as it is providing local farmers with advanced facilities to double the production of wheat from next year.

However, wheat traders in Egypt blamed poor facilities for the lowest wheat production in the country.

There Is Nothing For The Farmers To Celebrate In The Country. There Is No Fuel, Water, Seeds And Manure. The Unavailability Pushes Farmers to the Black Market, “said former GAFTA president, Ashraf El Attal.

According to this popular wheat trader, Government failed to provide farmers with seeds, fertilizers, and irrigation facilities but expected them to increase wheat production.

Last year, the supply ministry had procured near about 4 million tonnes of wheat from local farmers. A completely new system was designed to curb smuggling to prevent the import of cheap quality wheat from Russia, Romania, and other wheat supplying nations to Egypt.

Wheat traders in Egypt allege that some private sector mills bought the wheat from farmers and sold it at higher prices than the Government price for the wheat in the country.

“Some private sector mills were purchasing local wheat from farmers at $222.16. Government. The government was purchasing wheat at 3,600 pounds while as the price of the imported wheat was 4,150 Egyptian pounds, “said an Egyptian wheat trader on the basis of anonymity.

According to the trader, this price gap created an opportunity for private sector mills to buy wheat in Egyptian pounds rather than paying in the US. Dollars.
