Why veterinarians Need Small Animal Surgical Instruments?

by Emily Sophia GerVetUSA

Veterinary surgical instruments are especially designed to be used in surgeries and all instruments come in different designs, and sizes for different purposes. A surgical instrument is a tool or device designed for specific purposes and actions to carry out desired procedures during the surgery. Some types of instruments are designed for a particular use and should be used for that purpose while some are used for general purposes. These are manufactured to play an important surgical role, and these undergo different processes like milling, forging, polishing, temping, etching and passivation. So, the life span of these instruments exceeds a decade. Some instruments are designed for general surgeries while some are designed for specific procedures. These veterinary instruments are designed for every purpose like some are for small animals, large animals, and veterinary dental instruments as well. Small animal surgical instruments are designed for small animals like cats, dogs, and many other small animals.

Veterinary Surgical Instruments list:

There are many veterinary surgical instruments but small animals also have different types of instruments so we will discuss their variations and types:

  1. Cutting instruments: Scissors are cutting instruments with two blades joined together at the pivot point so that sharp edges glide at each other to shear material that is between the blades. Here are some scissors which are used in small animal surgeries:

· Veterinary surgical scissors: these are used for cutting, removal of sutures, and removal of tissues in veterinary surgeries. These are available in many variations and lengths each of them designed for specific use and procedure. The sharp, blunt tip, serrated or non-serrated blades are used in various surgeries. Supercut scissors have one sharp razor blade and one micro-serrated blade. Scissors with tungsten carbide inserts have a golden handle and tungsten carbide instruments are more durable and long-lasting.

2. Grasping instruments: Surgical forceps may be broadly divided into two categories, Finger-ring forceps (also called hemostatic forceps, and locking forceps) and thumb forceps (known as pinning forceps). These are used for grasping, holding, or exerting traction upon objects, especially for delicate operations. These Finger-ring instruments resemble like scissors and have straight or curved jaws and have multiple variations, some are color-coated, and multiple types are available like mosquito hemostatic forceps, kelly forceps, and many more in different sizes and colors. Thumb forceps are used by compression between your thumb and forefinger. Iris forceps are used in ophthalmic procedures to hold iris tissue in the eye.

3. Retractors: are used to hold an incision or wound open, to hold an organ or tissue out of the way to expose what’s underneath during veterinary surgical procedures. These have two main categories i.e. self-retaining instruments and handheld retractors. Retractors should be placed to ensure appropriate visualization and to help clear the view of soft tissue. The surgical retractors’ list is enormous so the main purpose is not to reduce the number of surgery assistants but to provide better exposure and safety for the patient.

4. Needle holder: Olsen Hegar needle holder is used to hold needles and cutting sutures at the same time. It is an infamous surgical instrument in veterinary surgical procedures to firmly hold suture needles. It also has different variations in colors which helps veterinarians to differentiate easily, and available in different sizes to perform specific procedures.

Variations:

Each small animal surgical instrument has a different length, sizes, and different colors. Color coated design helps the surgeons to easily identify like some of the instruments come in rose gold, rainbow colors. It helps the veterinarians to easily identify during surgery and not only come in high-grade stainless steel but also with tungsten carbide inserts which is more durable and long-lasting and allow stronger grip. Different sizes help the doctor to perform specific surgeries and variation in sizes also helps, especially for small animal surgeries.
