Why The Senior Citizens Of The Country Need Your Attention?

by Divya S. Content Writer

This country needs to pay a lot more attention than it is paying its senior citizens. The sad condition of the elderly people in India is a topic that gets brushed under the carpet because most of us tend to ignore or not take it seriously. But the truth is that it is a topic that needs to be brought out in the open and be talked about because that is the only way something can be done.

The plight of the elderly

Care for old people is not something that too many people think about. A good number of these people lead impoverished and undignified lives. Many live with their children but are not looked after or given the life they want to live. This is not a situation that is restricted to the marginalised groups; it is highly prevalent in higher income groups of India as well. A lot of times, even physical violence does not escape these senior citizens and all of this reflects sadly on our society as a whole. It is time that something is done to rectify this issue.

What can be done?

Caring for the elderly is not something that only families need to do. The society should also become more accepting of this demographic who are infirm and may be financially weak as well. The best thing an average person in India can do is donate to a charity that is working in this cause. The charity that one is donating to should be worthy and highly reputed.

Helping the elderly is a commendable deed

A good charity works in many different ways to uplift the senior citizens of the country. Here are some of the ways your money can help:

·         Mobile healthcare: Affordable healthcare is still a pipedream in India, especially for the elderly. With people living longer, mobile healthcare allows the elderly to access treatments easily for chronic diseases, heart problems and hypertension.

·         Cataract surgeries: Cataract is a medical problem that a lot of senior citizens in the country suffer from. Social work organizations often ensure that elderly people who are in need of cataract surgeries can access them for free.

·         Cancer care: When cancer rears its ugly head, it can be difficult for a financially disadvantaged elderly person to get treatment without the help of a charity working in this cause.

·         Old age homes: Senior citizens who are left homeless can live with dignity in such homes till their final days.

·         Physiocare: Physiocare is an essential requirement for this demographic because of their physical infirmities. There are many charities which work at providing free physiocare to such people who are in need of it.

·         Disaster management: When natural disasters strike, it is usually the children and the elderly who are the worst affected. Working in tandem with authorities to make sure that the elderly are rescued and they get access to rehabilitation facilities is part of senior care services of many charities.

·         Livelihood support: The big problem in our country is that most people don’t think about retirement and when they start earning, they find that they have no money to live on. Charities which work at livelihood support for the elderly people are truly doing a worthwhile job.
