Why Silk Is Expensive

The origin of silk flowers is uncertain.  It is presumed, however, that they were first made in China, where silk was widely used to make all kinds of clothes and artworks.

The production of silk certainly can be traced back to this country, where the fabric was made out of the cocoon that was woven by the silk worm.  These days silk is quite expensive to buy and many of the artificial flowers are produced from a cotton and polyester material that has the look and feel of real silk.

This product is cheaper to manufacture, hard wearing and holds its colours just as well as their more expensive counterpart.

The reason why silk is much more expensive is the fact that each and every silk worm cocoon has to be plunged in hot water to unravel and to loosen the thread.  This thread can sometimes be up to 900 metres long.

The Egyptian pharaohs also made flowers, but in this case they were made from materials that were readily available in Egypt.  One of these materials was papyrus.  If you have ever seen a sheet of papyrus you will know that it is translucent and every bit as delicate as silk.

It seems that the Egyptians were the first to make flower arrangements of the blooms they produced.  It was not really until the eighteenth century that artificial flowers really gained a place into people’s hearts.  Households liked to see flowers that were not necessarily in season adorning their homes.

Of course, in our modern times we can buy flowers that are not in season all year round.  This is due to the invention of glass houses where plants are forced to grow all year round.  However flowers grown this way are often very expensive.

This is not to say that artificial blooms are cheap.  However, if you buy flowers such as these they will last you many years to come if they are properly looked after.
They are also extremely easy to look after.  They do not need water and fertilisers to keep them looking pristine.

All you need to do if you should have these flowers in the house is to keep them free of dust.  This is easily achieved by dusting them with a light duster a couple of times a week.  You should also take care that you do not placed them in direct sunlight as the petals will fade if you do this.

If you detect that your plants and blooms need a more thorough clean, you will be able to get a product that is just sprayed on the foliage and left to dry in the open air. Alternatively you may rinse them in warm and soapy water and let them dry naturally.

If you get fed up with looking at the same arrangement on your sideboard year in and year out, you can either purchase some more artificial flowers or arrange the bouquet differently with some fresh flowers added to the existing bunch.
