I like to think of love as unconditional. Would I love myself if I allowed someone to hurt me? No! So the key word here is loving yourself. Having the confidence, self acceptance and knowing who you are and what you will or will not accept. There are many reasons people choose the "wrong" person but what is wrong if it causes one to expand?

It looks like a bad experience story. Things are neither simple nor complicated and some points are contradictory here - love can just "happen" but of course in a due course of time you have to review your relationship before any serious commitment.
