Imagine this – you are at a high end jewelry store, looking at color engagement rings, when you notice that the person next to you is looking at a ring that you have never seen before in your life. The stone that is set inside the ring is half pink and has shades of grey running through it and although it looks stunning, you are not sure what the stone is. When you ask the salesperson about the same, you are told that the stone is actually a tourmaline and is actually quite a rare stone.

What is the least surprising part of all this is that tourmaline has been around for a really long time and is actually a stone that occurs naturally. This is actually a crystalline boron silicate, which comes into existence when it combines with other elements such as iron, magnesium, sodium, or potassium. It is normally classified as a semi-precious stone and is actually native to Sri Lanka. The Paraiba tourmaline, however, can be found only in Brazil and that too only in some states of the South American country.

It would not be odd for some people to wonder why so much attention is often lavished on this semi-precious stone. The fact of the matter is that this semi-precious stone is actually quite powerful and can have healing properties for human beings. Years ago, people started noticing that miners constantly fell ill and had issues with breathing and their lungs in general. However, someone noticed that miners who worked in tourmaline mines were not falling ill as much as the others. Many even noticed that certain aches and pains, burns and wounds were all healing much faster, even though they were working in the mines. Cases like these lead them to believe that tourmaline probably had healing properties.

This is what lead to the boom in the sale of tourmaline rings, all over the world, because this stone is known to help with migraines, menstrual pains, faster healing after surgeries and even aid with an improvement of chi, the life energy. However, before you decide that you too want such a ring, it would be wise to talk to a gemologist, who would not only tell you whether the stone will be beneficial for you, but also how small or large a stone you should wear. A good gemologist will also tell you that you have to get the stone set in a certain metal and that you should wear it on a certain finger.
