While strolling down the makeup aisles at the supermarket or flipping through the pages of a magazine, you may find that a few of the products proudly boast that they are “paraben free”. In fact, you may notice that it’s becoming much more common for beauty consumers to question whether or not their makeup contains parabens. But why has paraben free makeup become such a hot topic?

Parabens are synthetic preservatives that go by many names, including methylparaben, propylparaben, butylparaben, and isobutylparaben. For nearly seventy years, they have been used to help preserve the shelf life of beauty products. While parabens have effectively stopped the growth of fungus, bacteria, and microbes in makeup and skin care products, they are not without their risks. Within the past few years, many people are starting to question the safety of using parabens on a regular basis. A multitude of studies have proven that parabens can be quickly absorbed within the body of the consumer, potentially putting their health at risk.  Other studies have linked parabens to tumors and various cancers. Parabens can also affect the estrogen in your body, which has been associated with effects such as endometriosis and insulin resistance. And while not as severe, other risks include skin irritation, dermatitis, and rosacea, among other allergic reactions.

And while many insist that parabens are safe in balanced amounts, going paraben free with your cosmetics will eliminate any potential risks. Again and again, studies have linked this cheaply produced chemical with adverse health effects. Many consumers have concluded that it is better to be safe now than sorry later.

Because cosmetics are designed to absorb into the skin, chemically free makeup such as paraben free foundation can contribute to a healthier complexion. Because facial skin is sensitive and susceptible to the products we put it in direct contact with, it’s important to protect it by using gentle beauty products that are free from harsh chemicals, like parabens.Another sensitive region that comes into contact with makeup on a daily basis is the eyes. Some people even struggle with allergic reactions to the chemically fueled mascaras that fill the stores. A paraben free mascara is a more organic approach to defining your lashes.

While parabens have always acted as a preservative, removing them from cosmetics does mean your makeup will go bad quicker than usual. Many manufacturers replace the parabens in makeup with natural essential oils that take over preservation and further benefit the skin. A variety of oils are used, in various combinations. Manufacturers are beginning to use rosemary, goldenseal root, thyme, oregano, grapefruit seed extract, and lavender oil. These essential oils not only effectively replace parabens, but they can help soothe dry and irritated skin.

It’s generally agreed upon that the less chemicals in our environment, the better. Going paraben free can be the first step towards cleaner, healthier skin—as well as a healthier future. And because of its increased popularity, it isn’t hard to find. From the drugstore to the beauty store, paraben free makeup can be found anywhere.
