The generic version of the anti-depressant drug Cymbalta, by the name Duloxetine delayed-release has been approved for public use. The trend is on the rise as more people are trying the generic versions but is it safe?

According to the latest report by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the generic version of the anti-depressant drug Cymbalta has been approved for public use. The news came after multiple tests being conducted on the generic versions by the name Duloxetine delayed release capsules.

Some of the pharmaceutical companies that have received approval to market Duloxetine include Sun Pharmacy Global FZE, Aurobindo Pharma Ltd., Lupin Ltd., Torrent Pharmaceuticals, Teva Pharmaceuticals USA and Dr. Reddy’s Laboratories Ltd.

What are Generic Drugs?

A generic drug is a drug that is equivalent or within an acceptable bioequivalent range to the brand drug in strength, quality, performance characteristics, dosage form, administration route and the intended use. It must also contain the same active ingredients that are found in the branded drug formulation.

The generic products usually become available in the market once the patent of the original drug expires often leading to a substantial increase in competition owing to reduced prices of the drug.
Generic drugs are essential as they allow a wider access to Healthcare as they are sold at a price lesser than its branded version.

Why more people are shifting towards the use of generic drugs?

  • According to US Census, in 2010, 71.2% people preferred Generic drugs compared to 28.8% brand drugs.
  • The reason being the price of generic drugs is much lesser than that of the brand drug. The average price of brand drugs prescription was $166.61 while that of a generic drug was $44.14.
  • Many big pharmacy companies are shifting or diversifying into producing generic drugs owing to the increase in its demand.
  • Congressional Budget Office suggested that patients could save in between $8-$10 million per year in retail sales.
  • Globalization of generic drugs has brought in international pharmacies. Countries such as India, Canada, Russia, France, and Greece are some of the fastest growing pharmaceutical manufacturing hubs.

Are Generic drugs safe to take?

The question arises because there are a number of online pharmacies selling fake drugs. Regulatory bodies work round the clock to put a stop to them. Choosing a genuine pharmacy will ensure that the prescription drugs one buys are safe to use.

  • Generics are copies of brand drugs so they are safe to take when they are approved by FDA.
  • In most countries, brand and generic versions go through the same approval process. The quality and testing parameters for both are the same which makes them a safe option.
  • As the generic drug manufacturers do not need to invest in research and development, promotion and advertising, they are easy on the pockets. Taking care of health becomes easier.
  • Many employers and insurers promote the use of generic drugs but it could have some underlying commercial connections as well.

The trend is definitely on the rise as more people are trying the generic versions of the drugs that have been around for long. Whether a person needs to take the brand or generic medicine remains at their discretion and expertise of their physician.

For example, if someone is suffering from depression, one may now choose either Cymbalta or its generic version of the name of Duloxetine. As both versions have the same active ingredients, both may have serious side effects. In either case, the medicine must be taken only after been prescribed by their physician.
