According to Hindu texts, marriage is not just a ritual but is the first step towards building a new society. And it is crucial that marriage needs to takes place between two equals. The best way is to identify compatibility in astrology.

Vedic astrology as a science was developed by ancient Hindu sages for the benefit of society. They treated science divinely and developed it for the betterment of society. And Vedic astrology calculates the influence of planetary motion and energies in the universe on human life based on the time and place of birth. A subject that evolved centuries, astrology is powerful to analyze your horoscope and predict how the future will be. And horoscope is mainly considered while we fix marriages.

Marriage is between families

Unlike the western concept, we never treat marriage as a contract between two individuals; instead, it is the beginning of a relationship between two families. The system believes in harmonizing two individuals for ultimate eternity. Hindu texts support the husband and wife to pursue dharma, Ardha, kama to ultimately attain moksha (emancipation), which makes a marriage is a divine institution.

How marriage compatibility is studied?

According to Vedic astrology, there should be strict implementation of guna ponthana and the match needs to be made with an age gap of 5, 7, or 11 years. The main motto is to avoid ego clashes and also grahas move into different rashis with time. Jupiter and Saturn move by five and two rashis respectively and therefore have good Kona stithi (planetary angle) making the marriage more compatible.

However, it is often seen recently that the age gap is lesser by 1 or 2 years and hence the improper interactions between rashis affect the relationship. When there is an age gap of 5, 7, or 11 years, while one of the partners is aggressive at particular times, the other is calm and peaceful and many similar instances where both of them balance each other.

In addition, there horoscopes or kundlis should also match to fix a marriage. As per Vedic astrology, there are 36 guna ponthana for a better marriage.

The natal horoscope or Kundli of girl and boy needs to match before the marriage is fixed. There are eight aspects in the birth chart (called koota) with certain points and in total; they are 36 in number out of which at least an 18-point match is required to proceed further.

1. Jaati / Varna: As per the Hindu tradition, there are four varnas Brahmana, Kshatriya, Vaishya, and Shudra. This is a major factor to consider while checking the horoscope.

2. Vashya: This ascertains the person who dominates the relationship. It calculates mutual interaction/attraction and the equation of marriage. A person comes under any of the five categories

2. Vanachara (Wild animals like lion, tiger),

3. Chatushpada (Small animals like deer),

4. Jalachara (Sea creatures like fish) and

5. Keetaka (Insects).

A person’s nature is determined by the animal he represents in a horoscope. This holds two points in marriage compatibility.

3. Tara: This is the birth star. 27 stars are indicating the total lifespan which holds a maximum of three points.

4. Yoni: This determined the level of intimacy and mutual love in the relationship and a maximum of four points is given by this category.

5. Graha Maitri: This indicates the compatibility in the family which contributes to a maximum of five points.

6. Gana: The temperament and behavior differences in the couple based on three ganas (deva, manava, and rakshasa) holds six points in marriage compatibility.

7. Rashi: Based on the position of the boy’s planets in different houses concerning the girl’s birth chart, the rashi is denoting love and emotional attachment in the marriage and gives a maximum of seven points.

8. Nadi: It is related to the physical and mental health and reproduction of the couple. It is most crucial in matchmaking as it contributes to a maximum of 8 points.
