Why is the purification of tap water is necessary?

by Water Purifier Anjan Sengupta (Service Head)

There are a number of reasons for wanting to purify drinking water. Clean water is important for every human being, and by using water purification systems, you can ensure that the water you use for drinking and cooking is always safe, sustainable, and free from unpleasant taste and odor.

Even though access to clean water for consumption must be a basic human right, an increasing number of regions still face challenges where they lack drinking water resources. The challenges to enable access to clean and safe water are not only limited to developing countries; the United States and Europe also face some of these challenges when it comes to drinking water, contaminants, taste, environmental issues, and odor.

But the good news is that a household water purification system can help overcome these challenges and ensure clean drinking water right from the tap. Tap water purifier can also help to:

a)      Add an extra layer of security

In most industrialized countries, municipal water treatment systems are quite effective. However, the public water treatment is not dependable. There are a number of incidents where contaminants from pollution, lead from outdated or faulty water pipes, or residue from pesticides have found their way into the tap water. Other extraordinary weather conditions, like heavy rainfall, can also put a strain on municipal water treatment facilities.

Hence, it is not irrational to want an extra layer of security in order to supplement local or municipal water treatment. You can also do this by using a household water purification that is unable to remove a wide range of impurities.

b)      Help to remove unwanted contaminants

Lead, pesticides, bacteria, viruses, and many more physical, chemical, biological, and radiological compounds can find their way into the water supply. It is also impossible to remove all the traces of contaminants from the water, so the local water authorities have regulated a chart on how much of a specific substance is acceptable for the water to contain.

Water that lives up to these standards is usually considered safe to drink. You might have your own preference for how high a level of contaminants is okay to have through drinking water. A private water purification also lets you set your own limits.

c)      Removes chlorine from the water making it healthy

Chlorine is generally used in swimming pool water which can cause tanning, but it is unacceptable to drink it since chlorine is not good for health at all. It can affect your health in various ways and can cause difficulty in breathing, chest tightness, skin-eye irritation, and other sorts of health issues top count a few. Hence, before drinking, ensure that it is chlorine-free.

d)      Protect the health

Consuming water that contains bacteria and viruses can lead to serious health issues and diseases like diarrhea, cholera, and dysentery. If you live in an area where such diseases are high risk, then the effective way is to protect yourself by using reverse osmosis or RO water purification systems.

The pore size of these membranes used for RO is measured in nanometers and used by all the best water filters, and they are small enough to stop both viruses and bacteria. Additionally, RO also removes common chemical contaminants like sodium, chloride, copper, and lead.

e)      Cut back on plastic in order to protect the environment

The annual consumption of bottled water worldwide is said to be in millions. Around 35% of European households don’t drink water from the tap, and bottled water has grown by more than 10% in a year over the last decade. Generally, bottled water is always considered convenient because it is portable. However, that convenience comes with problems and high environmental costs. Costs like pollution are associated with the manufacturing of plastic, energy, transportation, and extra water use, which makes bottled water an unsustainable choice for consumption. Drinking water from the tap is not only cheap, but it is also environmentally friendly. Just by installing a water purification system at home, consumers can access clean drinking water in an environmentally friendly way.
