Which water purification technique is better?

Finding pure, clean, and safe drinking water is quite challenging because of the growing population, environmental degradation, and industrial development. Given the situation, it is more critical that we understand the process of filtration and various water purifiers available on the market to ensure that our drinking water is of high quality.

Although water contains numerous minerals that are beneficial to the human body, there are also various impurities which when consumed can lead to a variety of ailments. Excessive salt, suspended particles, and bacteria can be removed through a water filter and retain important minerals. However, with so many manufacturers on the market these days, it's difficult to tell which ones are good and which meet the basic standards.

Water filters and water purifiers operate on the same mechanism. They take up polluted raw water, filter out contaminants such as sediments and microorganisms, and then deliver clean water. However, there is one significant distinction between the two, a purifier can eliminate viruses and germs but a filter cannot.

Here are different filtration techniques used in some of the best water purifiers for home:

Nowadays, a variety of drinking water purification methods are available, each of which uses a distinct way to treat and purify water. The following are the most common water filtration methods:

  1. Reverse osmosis systems

Reverse osmosis purifiers help flush pollutants from water by passing them through a semipermeable membrane. Domestic reverse osmosis systems are the most efficient way to cleanse your drinking water at home.

RO provides the highest level of filtration available, they are increasingly being used in hospitality settings to handle coffee-making water. They're typically used in tandem with an activated carbon filter to ensure that the water has the fewest contaminants possible.

Reverse osmosis systems feature a holding tank and can be installed under the sink. The fundamental disadvantage of reverse osmosis as a water filtration process is that some pesticides, solvents, and metals such as chlorine and radon are not removed.

  1. Alkaline filter systems

Alkaline water helps the body maintain a neutral pH level, tastes excellent, and is 100% natural. The pH of alkaline water is naturally high, ranging from 8 to 9.5. The majority of people's diets are high in acidic foods with pH levels ranging from 3.3 to 5.

Alkaline water is mineralized and full of beneficial electrolytes which provide maximum hydration. Because of the mineral hydrates, it tastes nicer and sweeter than plain water. The use for an alkaline filter system is at home. 

  1. UF purification

Ultrafiltration (UF) purification uses membranes that are similar to RO membranes, and have larger holes. UF membranes can remove all colloidal particles effectively, including harmful organisms and turbidity, but they leave dissolved solids and salts behind. UF water purifiers, unlike UV purifiers, eliminate all germs and bacteria from the water physically.

When the tap water is not hard and has low TDS, then ultrafiltration or UF water purifiers are considered as good as RO water purifiers. However, RO is important if the water is hard and has too much TDS.

  1. UV purification or e-boiling

UV water purification is a type of filtration system that uses ultraviolet light to eliminate all germs, bacteria, microorganisms, cysts, and other pathogens from the water. UV light water filtration is a simple yet effective way for killing 99.9% of dangerous bacteria in water. The water purifier contains a small mercury lamp that emits short-wave UV radiation.

These rays irradiate the water and enter bacterial and viral cells, preventing them from replicating. Microbes and creatures are unable to reproduce and will perish as a result. This filtration technology just removes bacteria and the dead microorganisms that remain in the water. Separate filters are necessary to physically remove the dead microorganisms. Other filtration techniques, such as reverse osmosis or activated carbon filters, are frequently used in conjunction with UV water purification.

Which water purifier is best for Home?

There are multiple brands of water purifiers available in the market. Each of the products has different costs, the types of filters, and the method of purification. Nowadays, most water purifiers combine two to three techniques, such as RO + UV + MF Water Purifiers or RO + UV Water Purifiers.

Some branded products like Hindustan Unilever’s Pureit Marvella UV provide the benefit of UV sterilization and also offer filtration through an activated carbon filter.
