Why Is Superdry So Popular?
If you live in the UK, then you will understand just how popular Superdry clothing has become. You cannot walk down the high street, visit a pub, go to the cinema, or in fact, go out at all, without seeing somebody in a Superdry hoody or t-shirt. What has made this brand so popular? Is it just clever marketing, or is it something else?
Superdry: The Rise
Superdry is actually a relatively new brand of clothing; they have been around for no longer than a decade – and in fact, the inspiration for the brand happened during a 2003 trip to Japan. This means that in the short space of 10 years, this brand has gone from non-existent to worldwide superstar. Many factors have set this brand aside from the competition, and we will look at each in turn.
Something Unique
When they arrived on the market, during the late winter of 2003, there were no other brands on the market that were offering unique designs. The majority of urban wear designers were creating similar lines of clothing, graphic tees with graffiti style art, hoodies with huge logos and no other style, jumpers, shirts and t-shirts that were all the same. These clothes were all much westernised, and it was starting to get…well, to be frank…boring.
Superdry clothing arrived with its funky Japanese prints and the casual clothing market was revolutionised. Superdry allowed people to step out of the norm, while staying in fashion. The style of the clothing remained the same, but the designs changed; and what they bought with them was something unique, funky and fresh. Needless to say, people instantly loved the design. In fact, initially, Superdry was a brand for celebrities. they learned about the label early and they adopted it into their wardrobes – and to be fair, a large part of their initial rise to fame is thanks to these celebrities, most notably of which is, probably, David Beckham.
Quality
Not only did Superdry bring something unique to the market, they also bought quality. You can instantly tell with any of the Superdry range that they are made to an exacting standard. They have a very high cotton thread count, which makes them extremely heavy, and this heaviness is again, part of what sets them aside as a brand. They have a very particular look (and this is not taking into account the Japanese design), with fine stitching and a sturdy build quality. When people wear Superdry clothing, they instantly feel as if they are wearing clothing that is particularly fine quality, and the reason they feel this is because they are.
Exclusivity
Superdry are a relatively expensive brand, particularly when you consider that they are part of casual fashion, which tend to offer better value for money. This is a clever marketing ploy on their part. By pricing slightly above the average for this quality and style clothing, they market to people who are upwardly mobile and who seek to feel a sense of exclusivity in their day-to-day lives. They have managed to capture this sentiment very well. For this reason are particularly popular amongst the urbanites.
