What is Silage?

Advantages of Silage
Both silage and hay are successful feeding options
among the farmers when the livestock are unable to graze during the dry season.
Both of them made with grass and using the prevention method of rummage.
However, despite various similarities, both of them
have major differences. The main variation between hay and silage is that the
grass that’s dried and cut to connect in the animal food. Silage is made with
the fermented grass, and then it is stored in the silo for some time before
offering it as food to the animals. During fermentation, all the nutritions of
the grasses combined together to provide the health benefits to the animals.
The following are some other facts which make silage better than hay:
Moisture Content - Hay is
made by drying grass and crops; this is the reason why it has less moisture
content. On the other hand, silage is made by fermenting crops; this is the
reason why it contains more moisture content. As per experts and analysis, hay
contains 12% moisture, and silage contains 40-60% moisture, which makes it more
healthy as compared to hay.
Storage Methods - The
storage methods of hay and silage make a huge difference between both of them;
hay is cut, dried, and then stored in bales. It does not contain all the
nutrition of the crops. On the other hand, silage is compressed and then stored
in air-tight silos. Silage is not dried; this is why it has more nutrition
value.
Digestive capabilities - Hay is
difficult to digest due to less moisture content in it. On the other hand,
silage is easy to digest due to its moisture content and also nutritious as
compared to hay.
