Why is kidney transplantation important?

by Hariom Sharma Digital Marketing Expert

Organ donation is a process of removing organ from the donor bodies and surgically placing it in another body. You can be a part of giving someone a second chance at life by donating your organs. Organ donation includes heart, liver, kidneys and pancreas. A person needs organ donation when their organs have failed or are not working properly because of some disease. Organ donation is said to be one of the best medical advances as it helps give someone a second chance at life.

There is a huge demand of organ donation in India but the supply is very little due to lack of awareness among the people about the importance of organ donation. India is known to be the diabetes capital and soon it will also be known as the liver disease capital according to the experts. One of the most frequently performed organ donation is the kidney transplant. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure and it is a big problem in the country.

The major function of the kidneys is to remove waste from your body and they filter about 45 gallons of blood every day. So when the kidneys stop working waste build up in your body leading to issues like high blood pressure and then at some point kidney failure. Someone who is suffering from chronic kidney disease has two options; either they can get a kidney transplant from a healthy donor or get on dialysis. Dialysis is a treatment where the blood gets filtered by a machine with the help of a tube.

Kidney transplant is not your last option in some cases the doctor prefer kidney transplantation over dialysis. The reason for preference of kidney transplant is you get to live a longer life. With dialysis a person can get 15 years of a healthy life but with the kidney transplant a person of the age of 30 years can get the number jumped up to 30-40 years. They tend to have a better quality of life, fewer limits on diet; do not have to spend hours every week getting dialysis and more energy.

People get dialysis because there are very less organs available for donation and due to the lack of awareness people tend to not donate organs. There are lot of stigmas around the organ donation, with less availability of organs people do not have another option but to get on dialysis and wait for a kidney transplant.

There are also a lot of risks associated with kidney transplant like for example rejection of the kidney, side effects from medicine, surgery also have some risk involved. But on the whole kidney transplantation is one of the most successful operations which will improve the quality of the person life and help them live longer.
