Why is it important to check the history of Used Car?

by Radha Lakshmi Blogger

Before you buy a used car, it is crucial you understand its history to be clear on what you’re signing up for. If you don’t check its history, you may very well end up overpaying for a car. Or worse, you could be putting yourself and passengers in danger on the road. Some issues like minor accidents may not mean anything grave, but other things should be clear red flags. If the seller tries to dissuade you from getting a picture of the used car’s history, do not buy the vehicle if you want to save yourself headache in the future. Some things you should be checking when you’re planning to buy a used vehicle are as below.

Major accidents

This is one of the foremost parameters to check – if the vehicle has ever been in a major accident. A mechanic can help you understand if the car’s paint job is original, in case of an accident. Also check if the repairs were done by a certified body shop by the manufacturer or a low-cost repair shop since this will have a great deal of impact on the car’s value.

Multiple owners

A used car with multiple owners in the past may not be necessarily a bad thing, but it could be a red flag. In any case, dig deeper. Different owners means they had  different driving styles which can cause higher than usual wear and tear on the car. It’s advisable to go for a used car with just one single past owner as they’re likely to be in better shape.

Service history

Get an idea of a used vehicle’s service history to understand its current value. Don’t be fooled by a car that doesn’t have scraps or dents; it may be the case that the inner workings aren’t in perfect shape. Check for things like used car’s last tire rotation, last servicing of the brakes, battery replacement, etc. Check service records against the user’s manual to determine if maintenance was performed properly.

Some other things to check for in the history of a used car -

·       Structural Damage

·       Registration History

·       Warranty Information

·       Airbag Deployment

·       Estimated Miles Driven Per Year

·       Length of Ownership

While new cars definitely have their advantages, buying a second-hand car is much more cost-effective. But when you buy a used car, there is sometimes not a lot of clarity on its history, which is a problem. Always check a vehicle’s history and take it for a test drive. Get a qualified mechanic to inspect the car properly for any issues.

Once you’re satisfied with a vehicle’s history, go ahead with the purchase. When it comes to financing, there are plenty of used car loan options in the market. Compare lenders and quotes when you go for a second-hand car loan both online and offline. Also check your eligibility and documentation requirements so you’re prepared for the process when you apply for a used car loan.
